Ukrainian pianists Alla Melnychuk and Daryna Holius, who both trained at the Kharkiv Conservatory before the war, performed together as the duo Mavky at St. John’s Battery Cafe on July 23. The set mixed jazz and film standards with Ukrainian folk songs reworked into jazz arrangements, drawing a mixed crowd of St. John’s regulars and members of the city’s Ukrainian community. Mavky has two more shows lined up for October 10 in Corner Brook.
