Volunteering offers international students a way into the community, groups say at Memorial expo

A whiteboard on a wheeled stand in a tiled university hallway reads “Happening Now: Get Involved and Volunteer Expo. Meet volunteer groups from the area, 11 to 3 PM.” Behind it are a Student Volunteer Bureau banner and a table with two people sitting at it.

Volunteer groups from the St. John’s area recruited students at the Get Involved and Volunteer Expo at Memorial University on September 22, 2026. Representatives of the Student Volunteer Bureau, Let’s Talk Science, the Federation of Francophones and AFS Canada say volunteering gives international students and newcomers a way to get to know the community in Newfoundland and Labrador, practise a language and make friends. Ife, who is originally from Nigeria, says volunteering with AFS Canada helped her adjust to life in St. John’s.
